My Antics as a DIY Bride

Friday Feb 20, 2009

So I know I’ve made many mentions to my wedding crafts, so I figured it was finally time to share.

I am giving each bridesmaid jewelry to wear to the wedding, a canvas tote with their first initial embroidered on it (bought those, I don’t embroider), their bouquet, a picture frame, and the survival kit.  Unfortunately I already wrapped the jewelry and didn’t take pictures, so I can’t show those.  Each bridesmaid’s jewelry is a different style, which I picked to coordinate with their dresses (all are black, chiffon, and floor length, but different styles).  The jewelry is silver and has red Swarovski crystals.

The survival kits have a lot of stuff in them.  Read the rest of this entry »

The Way I See It

Friday Feb 13, 2009

As always, I have been thinking a lot about my weight, and lately I’ve felt rather reflective. I have been reading tons of success stories lately of people who I really admire as far as weight loss is concerned. The one thing I noticed that they all have in common is that they were basically willing to do whatever it took to lose weight, which is awe-inspiring to me. From what they have written, most of them do not eat fast food, some don’t eat meat, they don’t drink alcohol, they eat very clean and they exercise a lot.

I’ll be honest, reading their success stories has left me with mixed reactions. On one hand, I’m amazed by their transformations and inspired. But, then when I dig deeper into their diet, I’m always left with a sour taste in my mouth (no pun intended). I read what they say they eat on a daily basis and it actually annoys me a little. I wonder how anyone could be happy eating the foods they list day after day. It sounds boring and all that planning just sounds like so much work. It has made me realize that one of my biggest fears about losing weight is that I won’t be able to have thinness and still have a life that is fun and worth living. I don’t see a life in which I eat nothing but fruits, vegetables, yogurt, non-fat cheese (gross), fish, and chicken as a life I want to live. It’s too boring, too structured and has zero appeal to me. Variety is the spice of life! The absolute last thing I want is to turn into someone who cannot be spontaneous because they haven’t remembered to pack their carrot sticks and hummus; I refuse to be the person that brings my own food everywhere I go!

Really, it isn’t even about what they eat. Read the rest of this entry »

What’s Up & Down

Tuesday Feb 10, 2009

I realize that it has been awhile since I posted anything new; I guess life has been busy lately.  So, let’s see…

In the past couple weeks I tried my dress on several times and took it to a well respected seamstress nearby who assured me that there was a way to make it work.  Unfortunately, she needed a lot of lead time and $400 to make it work.  So, I found another seamstress who has assured me she can fix it in a month, and so I am going to see her on the 28th.  In order to make my dress fit, ironically enough, they’re going to be cutting fabric out of it, even though it is too small.  Basically, we’re going to make it lower in the back, which gets me around the fact that it’s still too small at a couple points in the middle.  I am pretty satisfied with that.  The dress is very nice and I don’t have to spend money on another dress, plus the second seamstress is much less expensive than the first one I met with.  I’m calling it success, even though it’s not exactly what I had hoped for when I bought my dress last July; at least I am going to wear the dress, and I’m not having any extra fabric added to it in order to make it fit.  After talking to the first seamstress a couple weeks ago, I wasn’t sure what to do so I went to David’s Bridal and tried a couple of dresses there.  I found a couple that looked alright, but they just were nowhere near as nice as the dress I already had and with the cost of tailoring them added in, they’d cost much more than the alterations for my dress.  So, I will be wearing my original dress, and it’s the nicest dress I tried on, by far.

Since I decided that my progress has been good enough on the dress front, I went in for a Lasik consultation last Wednesday.  Read the rest of this entry »
