Goals

I think it’s common knowledge among those of us trying to lose weigh that having well defined goals is a necessary thing. I’ve written goals for myself a zillion times by now… I probably have 15 postcards floating around my house and in old purses with things like “By November 7th I will lose 15 pounds of fat,” and “In December I am going to wear a two piece swimsuit in Hawaii and feel great doing it,” etcetera, written on them. Obviously, just having a goal written down doesn’t mean it will magically be achieved, but nevertheless, I’m going to give it another shot.

I’m done, however, with the goals that say “I want to feel confident in my own skin” and “I want to lose weight so I can live a long and healthy life” blah, blah, blah. I don’t know about you, but for me, this weight thing is entirely about vanity. Sure, it is great not to feel winded climbing a flight of stairs, but I can already do that. I don’t have any health complications from my weight. None. I had very slightly high cholesterol at my last test (2 points into the high category), but for all I know I’m already back in the normal range. At this point in my life my cholesterol isn’t keeping me up at night (heck, just about nothing can keep me up past 10:30 anymore!). So, just so I’m clear, this is all about losing pounds and inches so I can look better. I think feeling better is going to happen automatically, so that isn’t part of my goals. Are ya with me?

Alright, so here we go…

1. Get out of the obese BMI category – Weight of 185
Reward – Book on making clay flowers

Achieved on August 27, 2008, the book has already been read cover to cover :)

2. Lose 10% of my initial body weight – Weight of 182
Reward – Supplies for making clay flowers
Goal Date – September 10, 2008

Achieved on September 6, 2008, 4 days ahead of schedule!

3. Weigh 175
Reward – Chandelier for Dining Area
Goal Date – October 10, 2008

Achieved on October 15, 2008

4. Lose 10% of my body weight – Weight of 164
Reward – New Perfume

Achieved on December 29, 2008

5. Get out of the over weight BMI category – Weight of 154
Reward – Rock Band for the XBox

Achieved on August 29, 2009

6. Lose 10% of my body weight – Weight of 148
Reward – Custom jeans (maybe 2 pair?!)

7. Ultimate Goal -Bikini Body – Weight unknown (guess of 130)
Reward – A cruise!

Originally I had a date assigned to each goal and to meet the goals on time I had to lose 1.5 pounds per week.  At first that was doable, but what I quickly learned is that once I was behind on one goal, I was going to miss the goal date set for all the others that followed.  Ultimately, having deadlines that were so close the way I did was just adding more stress and pressure, and frankly, I have enough of that as it is!  Slow and steady wins the race, right?
